Mark grew up the son of missionary parents in the jungle of Peru. After moving to Canada at the age of 15 he discovered a love for music through strong role models at Caronport, Sask. There he toured with music groups and began exploring his vocal capacities. He married friend, collaborator, and fellow singer Cheryl Sorell in 1983 and soon had a family of 4 children.

He recorded his first album, Near to the Heart (‘88), a musical journal of his time with Cheryl in the Philippines church planting the previous year. His second album, Rise to the Challenge ('89), came together quickly; it was written, recorded, and ready in about two months. Urgent Call came out soon after in '90 – an album showcasing Mark’s growth and maturity as a writer – and was awarded #7 all-time best at CCM Magazine.

Mark and his family moved from Three Hills to Calgary, and he took a music position at Venture Teams International (VTI), an arts-based missions organization. He continued to work and write music to be included on his next albums. The Best of Mark Sorell, a compilation was released in ‘94, and he released and toured his fourth album, Launching Pad, in ‘97.  Currently, Mark works under Action International training and leading arts-based teams of young adults to different urban centers around the world.

Recently, Mark recorded and released three new singles “He Turned to Me”, “Brand New Thing”, and “Getting Started”.  He intends to complete an album in the coming months, motivated by the desire to share hope in a chaotic era.
