About

Mark Sorell

Mark Sorell is a Canadian singer-songwriter, storyteller, and ministry leader whose life and music have been shaped by a lifelong journey of faith, creativity, and global mission.

He grew up as the son of missionary parents in the jungles of Peru, an early experience that shaped both his love for people and his passion for sharing hope through story and song. At age 15, his family moved to Canada, where he discovered a deepening love for music and performance while studying at Caronport, Saskatchewan. There, under strong mentorship and encouragement, he toured with music groups and began developing his voice as both a vocalist and songwriter.

In 1983, Mark married his longtime friend, collaborator, and fellow singer Cheryl Sorell. Together they built a family with four children and have continued to share life, ministry, and music ever since.
Mark’s recording journey began with Near to the Heart (1988), a musical reflection of his time with Cheryl in the Philippines during church-planting ministry. This was followed by Rise to the Challenge (1989), written, recorded, and completed in a matter of weeks, and Urgent Call (1990), an album that marked a season of growing maturity in his songwriting and was recognized by CCM Magazine as one of its top releases of the time.

After moving from Three Hills to Calgary, Mark served with Venture Teams International (VTI), an arts-based missions organization, where he continued to write, record, and mentor emerging artists. His catalog expanded with The Best of Mark Sorell (1994) and Launching Pad (1997), which supported ongoing touring and ministry engagement.

Today, Mark serves with ACTION International, helping train and lead arts-based teams of young adults into urban centers around the world. His work blends music, drama, storytelling, and creative media with a clear focus: communicating the hope of the Gospel in practical, engaging ways.

In recent years, Mark has released new singles including “He Turned to Me,” “Brand New Thing,” and “Getting Started.” He continues to write and record new music, with plans for a future album shaped by a desire to speak hope into a restless and uncertain world.
